Kathy is passionate about

all-around performers.

2010 Rose Achievement
Award Recipient

Kathy Scheel

Kathy Scheel joined Sweet Adelines International in 1971, and has been directing, choreographing and coaching choruses ever since! She is the director of Oregon Spirit Chorus in Salem, Oregon. She has directed 5 choruses prior to Oregon Spirit: Cowlitz Valley Chorus (Longview, WA), Columbia River Chorus (Vancouver, WA), City of Roses (Portland, OR), Willamette Sound (Wilsonville, OR), and Northwest Harmony (Vancouver, WA). All of these groups won honors at regional competition – including 2 championships, and on to the international competitions in Houston, TX and Phoenix, AZ.

As a gifted choreographer, Kathy creates and teaches moves that enhance the lyrics – she is widely admired for her ability to really “sell” a song, drawing the audience into the story. She has also served in various roles as a Region 24 leader – coordinating events, chairing committees, all with her trademark enthusiasm.

Kathy has been a musical educator for over 30 years and as a member of the Region 24 regional faculty, she travelled all over the Pacific Northwest to share her experiences and talents with others. She is passionate about helping others become stronger singers and better all-around performers.

Before barbershop became her “life-style”, Kathy played classical violin in Seattle and Longview Symphony Orchestras, the “fiddle”, guitar and bass in Silver Mountain Bluegrass Band, followed by a stint as a studio musician in a recording studio.

Outside of her musical life, Kathy is the proud mother of 21-year old college student Ken, and spends her days as a manager at Jacobs Engineering in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

As our director, Kathy encourages us to do our very best and we continue to learn something new each week. She teaches us vocal production, lyrical expression, characterization, synchronized singing, showmanship, rhythmic pulse and performance skills. She guides us through all the facets of four-part harmony in the barbershop style, giving us the tools to create a wonderful performing experience!
